Driving Instructor Training
Become a Driving Instructor
Part 1: The Theory Test
The first step is the theory test, which includes 100 multiple-choice questions across four categories: instructional techniques, road rules, traffic signs, and signals. To pass, you must score at least 85 overall and a minimum of 20 questions correctly in each category.
Next is the hazard perception test in video format. You will be shown 14 developing hazards and must quickly identify them, scoring higher for faster recognition. A minimum score of 57 out of 75 is required to pass. Our trainers provide materials and coaching to help you succeed with confidence.
Part 2: Driving Ability
This advanced practical test assesses your driving expertise. You’ll need to demonstrate safe driving across various road conditions and show a strong knowledge of the highway code. Your trainer will evaluate your performance and provide feedback to help you excel.
Part 3: Teaching Ability
This test measures your teaching skills. Over an hour, you’ll deliver a driving lesson to a pupil (either a learner or a full licence holder). Your ability will be assessed across three key areas: lesson planning, risk management, and teaching and learning strategies.
Qualify and Start Your Career
After passing all three tests, you’ll officially be a qualified driving instructor! Apply for your first ADI badge within a year of passing the Part 3 test to avoid retaking the exams.
